Christine Mangan’s book Tangerine is the story of Alice Shipley and Lucy Mason who met as college freshmen and became best friends. Now, after a year apart they meet again in Tangier where Alice has moved with her new husband, John. Alice has not adjusted to life in Morocco, which is too foreign for her liking, while Lucy thrives in the seductive city. Alice, an easily intimidated woman is marked by past tragedy and Lucy, is the ambitious and resourceful former friend who won’t stop until she gets exactly what she wants. A suspected dalliance by John paves the way for Lucy to manipulate Alice and push herself back into her life. When tragedy strikes Alice finds herself unable to trust even her own understanding of what her former friend might be doing to her. Lucy continues scheming and manipulating Alice to fit her own designs. The sensuous city of Tangier adds to the mystery behind Lucy’s plotting and Alice’s unknowing submission into Lucy’s trap.
