Louise Penny’s A Great Awakening is Salem Public Library’s Adult Book Discussion Selection for November 2020. The discussion will take place on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, from 7 to 8 pm via Zoom’s live, online, platform. The discussion is open to the public and there is no cost to participate.

About the book: When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the wall of a bistro in the Canadian village of Three Pines, it seems to be nothing more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Louise Penny’s A Great Awakening reveals that within the police force some members must be trained to solve crimes, but does that training help to create people capable of committing them? Former Chief Inspector Amand Gamache is given the map on the first day of his new job as Commander of the Surete du Quebec police academy. The mysterious map will eventually lead him to secrets, an old friend, and an older adversary. At the academy, Gamache finds four young cadets and a dead professor with a copy of the same strange map found near his body. Cadet Amelia Choquet, a brazen, angry woman, was a student of the murdered professor. The criminal investigation of the murder begins to focus on Gamache and Amelia and their possible involvement. The search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a hidden secret found in a stained-glass window that may provide the information to solve the baffling murder.
