The Honey Bus is a true story by Meredith May who chronicles her life after her parents divorced when she was five years old and her troubled mother moved her and her younger brother to live with her grandparents in California. Her grandfather tended beehives in Carmel Valley and she spent most of her non-school hours with her grandfather driving in his old truck to inspect hives, learning about bees, and eventually assisting him to harvest honey in an old bus he had designed just for that purpose. She turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled life. Her mother had receded into a volatile neurosis and despair, spending most days locked in her bedroom. It was during this pivotal time in the author’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged a bond with her grandfather, and opened her eyes to the wisdom of nature. The author weaves into the narrative intriguing facts about the social lives and roles of honeybees and the details of the process of producing honey. While her subject may be honeybees, they serve as a beginning for self-discovery and the natural world.
